Protection and Enforcement  

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR HOME

1. Use a deadbolt lock and solid core wood or metal door on all outside entrances.

2. Inventory, mark, and photograph or videotape your valuables.

3. Use automatic timers to illuminate your home.

4. Secure windows and doors with locks, deadbolts, or bars. Do not overlook sliding glass doors.

5. Trim landscape to reasonable height to provide good visibility and to hinder burglars from seeking hiding   
     places around your home or apartment.

6. Obtain a secure alarm system.  If you have an alarm system, you must register it with the Township.  To
     obtain a registration form, click here.

7. When traveling at night, be aware of your surroundings. Avoid using MAC or ATM machines at night.

8. Do not accept rides from strangers and stay away from parked cars containing individuals unknown to you.

9. If you leave your home, let someone responsible know where you are going and when you plan on returning.

10. If possible, carry a cell phone with you when traveling.

  

           11. Please remember to counsel your children about being home alone and how to play outside safely.  Also
                 review with them "stranger danger" rules.

OBTAINING A PROTECTION FROM ABUSE ORDER

If you are a victim of domestic violence, you have the right to go to court and file a petition requesting an Order for Protection From Domestic Abuse. The remedies offered by the Protection From Abuse Act may apply only to family or household members (current or former spouse, person who lives or lived with you as a spouse, parent, child, sibling, family related by blood or marriage), current or former sexual or intimate partner, or the other parent of your child.

Abuse is defined by law as:

·        Causing or attempting to cause bodily injury, including sexual assault.

·        Placing another person in fear of imminent serious bodily injury and/or false imprisonment.

·       Physically or sexually abusing children. Please note: Sexual or physical abuse of children should be immediately reported to Montgomery County Department of Children and Youth at (610) 278-5800 or to the Towamencin Township Police Department at (215) 368-7600.

·       Engaging in any course of conduct that places a person in reasonable fear of injury, including stalking.

The PFA (Protection From Abuse) Order could include any or all of the following remedies:

·         End of further acts of harassment, threats, abuse or stalking by the abuser;

·         Exclusion of the abuser from your residence;

·         No contact by the abuser with you, your relatives, and/or your children either directly, by phone or in writing;

·         Awarding you temporary legal and physical custody of minor children;

·         Abuser to turn over weapons used or threatened to be used;

·         Abuser to reimburse out-of-pocket expenses resulting from abusive behavior;

·         Other relief as determined by the court.

Remember, no one has the right to put you in fear of your life or to hit or harm you in any way.
