Police Department History
The
Towamencin Township Police Department began operation on January 1,
1975 under the command of the first Chief of Police Jack D. Rearick.
The department started with a total compliment of a Chief of Police,
6 officers and 1 clerk. Joseph Kirschner was appointed Chief of
Police in 1977.
Over the
years, and as the police department continued to grow with our
community, we developed many new and successful units. In 1982 we
became one of the charter members of the highly specialized “North
Penn Area Tactical
Response Team”. In 1983 the first Detective Unit was formed and in
1984 the Traffic Safety Unit was organized. Other units were started
to address the changing needs of the community and a Bicycle Patrol
Unit and our School Resource Officer program, which includes the
“TEAM” drug and alcohol prevention program in all of our township
elementary schools, soon followed. Regardless of unit assignment,
all Towamencin Township Police Officers are prepared to provide
basic police service to any citizen, and all department staff, sworn
or civilian, are dedicated to supporting our most important and
visible function, the uniform patrol function of the department.
In 2005
Chief Kirschner retired after 30 years of service, 28 as the Chief
of Police. In October 2005 Paul T. (Tim) Dickinson was appointed
Chief of Police. Currently, the police department employs 23 sworn
police personnel and 7 civilian staff. From 1975 until 2001 the
police department was located in the former police headquarters
building at 1655 Sumneytown Pike in Kulpsville. In April 2001 the
department moved into a new modern police facility located in the
Towamencin Township Municipal Center at 1090 Troxel Road.
Towamencin Township Police Department officers patrol their
assigned areas in police vehicles, on bicycles, or sometimes on
foot. The equipment and technology available to the police officer
of today is much different than what was available in 1975.
Towamencin Township Police Officers and staff are provided the best
state of the art equipment and technology both in the field and at
police headquarters. But, just like in 1975, the most important
element required for quality police service is not technology or
equipment, but rather the dedication to duty and the commitment to
partner with the community. The men and women of the Towamencin
Township Police Department continue to do so on a daily basis.
